medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List,
I have before me Sandra Lee Dixon's _Augustine: The
Scattered and Gathered Self_ and on the cover is a
reproduction of Gozzoli's "Arrival of Saint Augustine
in Milan." Front and center is what looks like
Augustine having the hem of his right pants leg
adjusted by a servant/admirer. The next scene in this
tryptich (sp?) is clericalized Augustine with Monica.
Does the center scene symbolize Augustine's
worldliness/grandiosity or is there an episode in his
life depicted here? I realize this is a bit early for
"medieval religion," but Augustine really spans the
centuries and I appreciate your tolerance and
expertise.
MG
p.s. I wonder if he met any "Romen" in Milan.
