medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. July) is the feast day of:
Filastrius of Brescia (d. c. 396) Filastrius was bishop of Brescia in the
mid-fourth century. Much of his time in office was spent fighting against
Arianism.
Arnulf of Metz (d. 640) A saint whose prestige helped establish the power
of the Carolingian dynasty, Arnulf was born in c. 582. He was mayor of the
palace for a Frankish king, and one of his sons married the daughter of
Pepin the Elder of the nascent Carolingian (Pepinid, Arnulfing) dynasty.
Later, Arnulf became a priest, and in 614 bishop of Metz. In 627 he
abdicated his office and spent the rest of his life as a hermit. Among
other tasks, he is now the patron of beer brewers.
Frederick of Utrecht (d. 835/838) According to an in-part legendary
account, Frederick became bishop of Utrecht in c. 818. He was an active
opponent of false doctrine and also of old Frankish customs; in the latter
capacity he argued against Louis the Pious' second marriage to Judith.
Frederick is supposed to have been stabbed to death at the irate Judith's
orders, in his own cathedral.
Bruno of Segni (d. 1123) Bruno was born near Asti in northern Italy in c.
1049. He became a Benedictine monk, and in 080 was made bishop of Segni.
In 1102, however, he abdicated his bishopric to become a monk and later the
abbot of the monastery of Montecassino. In c. 1113 he was ordered by the
pope to return to his diocese, which he did. He was canonized in 1181.
Berta of Marbais (blessed) (d. 1247) Berta was a widow who in 1227 became
first abbess of the Cistercian nunnery of Marquette in Flanders.
