medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. July) is the feast day of:
Aquila and Prisca (1st century) A Roman married couple that converted to
Christianity. Later, they came to Corinth, where they became acquainted
with St. Paul, providing him with work and a place in their home. They
went together to Ephesus, where Aquila and Prisca are said to have rescued
Paul. They are mentioned in several of Paul's letters.
Kilian of Würzburg and companions (d. c. 689) The Irish monk Kilian and
his companions Kolonat and Totnan were active as missionaries in the region
of Würzburg. He came into conflict with the local duke, because he argued
that the duke's marriage to his brother's widow was unlawful. The angry
duchess is supposed to have arranged the murder of all three Irishmen. The
relics of Kilian at Würzburg attracted Irish pilgims for many centuries.
Grimbald (d. 901) A monk of Saint-Bertin who was invited to England by
King Alfred in 887. In England he lived a communal life in Winchester, and
also became a court scholar, assisting Alfred with his translations of
Latin works into Old English. Grimbald was offered but refused the
archbishopric of Canterbury, instead becoming dean of the secular canons of
the New Minster at Winchester.
Edgar the Peaceable (d. 975) Born in c. 944 in Wessex, Edgar became king
of Mercia in 959, and by the time of his death was king of all England.
One of his greatest goals was the renewal of Benedictine monasticism in
England. A strong local cult developed in Glastonbury, where he was
buried. There were efforts to have Edgar formally canonized, but they
failed especially on the grounds of his liaison with a nun, who bore him
Edith of Wilton.
Eugenius III (Blessed) (d. 1153) Bernardo Paganelli was born in c. 1090 in
Tuscany. In 1135 he entered the monastery of Clairvaux, and in 1143
Bernard made the new recruit the first abbot of Tre Fontane near Rome. In
1145 he was elected pope (the first Cistercian to hold the office), taking
the name Eugenius III. Among his acts in office, Eugenius called the
Second Crusade.
