medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I think I see a pattern emerging, after all! Both
Helen of Skovde and Margret of Roskilde die violently,
at the hand of relatives - and are thus very much
in the tradition of martyr-kings of which
John Mundy spoke in an earlier message.
the royal martyr idea (as applied to males)
would have arrived with anglo-saxon clerics;
its application to women would, however,
seem to be a scandinavian contribution.
does anyone know of other female
saints who die at the hands of relatives
rather than pagans?
