medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear all
A few years back I asked this list about medieval guilds, how they might
have survived, and what their current 'powers' might be. I received no
answer. Stationers of London apart, I am still interested. What guilds
survive in Europe? What 'powers' might they still have?
With Dunfermline (I am a guildsman), the guildry still has the power to
determine the type of shop available within the city -- though this
power may now not be realised, since it was voluntarily passed to the
local authority. The key here is 'voluntarily'. Potentially, we are
still quite powerful, and we can withdraw the privilege at any time.
So what, pray, is the current power of guilds? I am especially
interested in 15c Germany, and its survivals, though this need not be
exclusive.
