medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A primary text is Proverbs 8: 22-4: 'Dominus possedit me in initio
viarum suarum, antequam quidquam faceret a principio. Ab aeterno
ordinata sum et ex antiquis, antequam terra fieret. Nondum erant
abyssi, et ego iam concepta eram.' Proverbs refers to Sapientia (and
remember that this is a feminine word), but this phrase was applied to
Mary as the prefiguration of her Conception: verses 22-35 are the
epistle at Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
