medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Frank,
As I feel personally responsible for the latest
brouhaha, I'll try to answer your question about
monasteries briefly. Consider that Saint Benedict and
Peter Abelard, among many others I'm sure, were
victims of attempted assassination by members of their
communities. And Pons of Melgueil marched on Cluny
with a small army in the 12th c. An abbot recently
confided to me that he had had to break up a
fistfight. (I don't think it was among the lay
workers.) Like all extended families, religious
communities are subject to the same bickering,
jealousies, and, yes, brawls that all familial groups
suffer. I don't think there have been any
assassination attempts lately, but one never knows.
