medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Oops. Meant to send this to the list as whole. I too kept coming
across this quotation, that had no footnote, so I share it just in
case anybody was sharing Shannon's frustration. -jim

Shannon:
The quotation is found in Matthew Paris's account of Grosseteste's
dying words. The definition in fact is found in Gratian's decretum,
but the etymological observation seems to be Grosseteste's.
The bibliographical details are:
Matthew Paris, Chronica majora, ed. H. Luard, Rolls Series, 5 vols
(London: Longman, 1880), 5.400-403 (definition on p. 400).
The formal source is Gratian’s Decretum, causa 24, q.3, cc.27-31,
I am hoping to have the search function up and running just after
Easter. sorry for the delay. Mind you, it would not have yielded
any helpful response, since Paris's text isn't part of the
sources...yet. I plan to include a conspectus of all medieval
sources for Grosseteste's life (exerpts, etc)...but that is long way
down the 'to do' list.
Cheers
Jim
