medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Texts for blessing houses can be found in various
Pontificals from the Romano-Germanic Pontifical of the 10th
Century onward (and maybe even before -- I don't have
Andrieu's edition of the _Ordines Romani_ on hand). One
common prayer (taken from the Pontifical of the Roman Curia
of the 13th Century) goes like this:
Te Deum patrem omnipotentem suppliciter exoramus pro hac
domo et pro domo huius habitatorbius, hac spe ut eam
bene+dicere et sancti+ficare digneris et, ut sint
promptuaria eorum plena, eructantia ex hoc in ilud, tribue
eis, domine, de rore celi habundantiam et de pinguedine
terre vite substantiam et desideria voti eorum ad effectum
tue miserationis perducas. Ad introitum ergo nostrum
bene+dicere et sancti+ficare dignare hanc domum, sicut
benedicere dignatus es domum Habraae, Ysaac, et Iacob, et
intra parietes istius domus angeli tue lucis inhabitent.
Per [Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum].
All of this would presumably be accompanied by aspersions
with holy water.
