medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

The symbolic meanings quoted relate to a set of
prayers to be said by the priest while vesting. They
occur in every altar edition of the Tridentine Missal
from the editio princeps of 1570. They are, however,
earlier; the only source of them I have used recently,
however, has been the 1516 'Missale secundum usum
ordinis Cisterciensi' printed by J. Petit in Paris.
There is a copy of this at the Briish Library; I
believe it has been microfilmed. Otherwise I have
copies of the prayers somewhere in my collection of
'in-trays'.
I have not seen the prayers in any secular mediaeval
missals I have consulted; this is not to say that they
are not to be found there! However, it does tend to
suggest that these prayers are perhaps a monastic
observance which entered the Roman Missal in (or
around) the Tridentine period as a result of the
Franciscan influence on the compilation of the
liturgical books resulting from the Council.
Cheers
Rob
