medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I realized I haven't introduced myself either. I'm an independent
graduate student/scholar, with interests in the material culture of
medieval religion -- topics like paternoster beads, relic purses,
knitted gloves, ecclesistical embroidery and religious clothing.
Apparently there hasn't been a lot of detailed research -- or at
least, I haven't found it yet -- on the actual physical objects
(materials, methods of construction, manner of use, etc.), since so
much of the focus has been on the devotional practices they
represent, or else on their artistic development. (Of course these
are fascinating too.)
The one exception is ecclesiastical textiles, which do get some
minimal attention from art historians; along with the 300 paintings,
manuscripts, and pieces in glass, metal, ivory, wood, enamel, gold,
and stone in your typical exhibition catalog there are often one or
two textile fragments <grin>.
I'd welcome references to relevant materials that I may have missed.
(And does anyone have access to *good* detail photographs of the
so-called chasuble of Sts. Harlindis and Relindis in Maaseik? All the
photos I've found are about two inches square.)
I am also an M.S. and Cand.Phil. in botany, which is sometimes
useful, but not with questions like this.
