medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
sounds like a fairly generic pointing gesture. Pointing gestures of one
sort or another are probably the most common form of gesture in medieval
images, especially I suspect in manuscript illuminations where they point
out the subject of dialogue or text.
