medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thank you for your help. In researching the death of Popes,
Paravicini-Bagliani often refers to Vitas of the popes, which have details
of papal funerals (including embalming, burial rituals, etc.) for popes
beginning around the 12th century (for example, the Vita of Paschall II, who
died in 1118), written by various Masters of Papal Cermonies. Would anyone
know if these Vitas would be in one collection somewhere, or, God willing,
be translated into English?
I would also like to find Pierre Ameil's papal funeral ceremonial (1385-90)
(the first official funeral ceremonial of Popes), preferably in English.
And any information on "the apothecary Giacomo, who had embalmed many Roman
Pontiffs" (during the Avignon period), would be a great help too.
I am at a disadvantage because I am not affiliated with any university, nor
am I terribly great at Latin (though I've got a few Ecclesiastical Latin
dictionaries).
If anyone knows where I could get information about these items, that would
be most appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Wendy Reardon
