This example is better. In the Usage Committee last year, two points
were made:
-- that simple resource discovery may be better served by using a
full-text string such as "19D10 Algebraic $K$-theory of spaces"
-- that values such as "19D10" may not be very useful without
qualification, but they are also not really harmful.
Diane Hillmann may have a more detailed opinion about the trade-offs
here.
Our notion of the usefulness of principles such as "dumb-down" -- and
how strictly they should be applied to specific elements -- is bound to
evolve. We (i.e. DCMI and the Usage Board) only have AT BEST a working
hypothesis of what "simple resource discovery" really entails and will
have to continually reevaluate that hypothesis in the light of
experience.
