Dear Simon,
It may be worth having a word with Tove Hatting at ZMUC (Zoological Museum,
Copenhagen). I had an interesting chat with her a couple of years ago. She
gave me an offprint re. beaver ageing:
Age determination for subfossil beavers (Castor fiber L.) (Mammalia) on the
basis of radiographs of the teeth. Vidensk. Meddr dansk naturh. Foren.
(1969) 132: 115-128.
She may have or know where modern comparative material can be found.
Best wishes
Richard Carter
While on the subject of beavers,
Dear Mark, Alan, and anyone else who may have a contact or be able to help.
Does anyone know how I might be able to get hold of a beaver skeleton or at
least part of a beaver skeleton (ie half head, one mandible, one fore- and
one hind limb)?
I am helping set up a zoo-archaeology lab in Lisbon, and beaver is one of
several species we have so far been unable to acquire
We can offer to exchange specimens - see our list on the web at
