Andy
For my part, over the summer I prepared a set of 8 'plagiarism
questions' for my students. I also prepared a comprehensive set of
notes for my colleagues following the Manchester Workshop. Both
are now on our School's intranet.
The Information Systems Institute runs degree programmes in
information systems and information technology.
I based my plagiarism exercises on two paragraphs which I copied
from a Princeton University student's thesis web site (suitably
acknowledged of course). I then created a "student's version", in
some cases merely cutting and pasting, in others paraphrasing,
summarising, changing the odd word or two, occasionally
referencing well, badly and not at all. Two questions were then
asked - 1. Is this an example or plagiarism? Answer yes or no. 2.
Justify your answer to 1 with reasons.
I repeated this process 8 times to produce a reasonably
comprehensive selection of plagiarised and non-plagiarised
examples. I then made this available on the my module web site for
the students. It has gone down quite well.
