erika, if you're going to take issue with my thoughts, please do not
misrepresent them to the list.
I did not say that the images shouldn't be shown. My point was that if you
need the images to feel "a" proper response you are a tool.
my post concerns knee-jerk reactions to tragic events that seem irrational
do to their sudden nature but actually have a logic (as grotesque as its
structure may be) behind them.
terrorist attacks have purpose, and as I have written before, we should
consider the intent/content of images we are shown through problematizing
their accepted meaning. TV is produced. Editors decide how images will be
presented and what music will accompany them. Why is it ATTACK ON AMERICA
instead of ATTACK ON THE UNITED STATES or ATTACK ON THE EAST COAST. You
should think about these things *and* or *along with* everything else.
I say that the event is awful but that I refuse to use media images to
support my initial response. I reject manipulated mass imagery because it
is a process that is always put into action to illicit specific responses
for a purpose that may or may not have been desired by the individual or
community in the first place.
For example, I do not mourn through revenge: it is not in my nature. I will
not allow the media to use images of Palestinian children cheering over
against Americans dying to illicit feelings of rage.
Also, Pearl Harbor is a drastically different event than NYC and
Washington...The comparison can only have one intention...Nevermind that
Hawaii is not on the mainland and that the Japanese were allowed to attack a
military base...Ask: why are we being pushed to compare the two events so
soon? Ask: how was Pearl Harbor used in the States? Ask: how aoon after did
the Japanese get interned?
GET IT...I hope we all do.
Don't accuse me of refusing emotions of sympathy as proper responses.
Don't purposefully misrepresent my post by acting confused by its intent.
I am very straightforward, the post is reasonable.
And as far as Documentary goes: I am very in touch with how real events are
manipulated to show Reality on film.
respectfully,
gary norris
