Thats not quite true, as the horses in Roman chariot were not harnessed
between two poles but either side of a central one. This means that horses
with large backsides and small would be able to pull the same chariot! In a
4 horse racing chariot the two outside horses were attached to the middle
two by harness not directly to the chariot so again wide and narrow horses
were both ok. So you may have to find another explanation of the widths of
raods, railways and space shuttles!
