Here at the Goettingen University Library
(http://www.sub.uni-goettingen.de/nojava_home-e.htm)
we, like a number of universities worldwide, publish
electronic versions of dissertations completed here as
an option for any department and candidate wishing it.
While there are some cases where dissertations that
are already in paper-print are published by us online,
the usual case is as a substitute for the paper
publication about 100 copies, which can cost the new
doctorate around 2,000 pounds sterling. Our service
(which in and of itself costs about 10 pounds)does
not, however, TOTALLY do away with paper copies. In
addition to a PDF file, the "doctor" must supply us
with one or two (depending on field) bound copies
printed on acid-free paper and a sworn statement that
the bound copy /copies are identical. This is in
addition to any departmental or divisional
requirements (usually around five) for hard copies.
We have a double system of electronic copies (one
online and freely accessible accessible copy and one
archived). While we hope that these will always be
around, we protect ourselves by saying something to
the effect of "to the best of our ability," realizing
the uncertainty of electronic storage even in a
vintage research library (that has discontinued making
had copies (cards)of the library catalogue).
