A number of people have asked about the origin of the quote attributed to
Robert Kennedy given in the message of Jan 16th.
I picked this up from the Campion Lecture given by Richard Jolly on
'Indicators of Development' at the RSS2000 conference last September.
Jolly's typescript gives the source as 'quoted by Oscar Arias in a tribute
to Mahbub ul Haq SOURCE NEEDED' (sic).
So if anyone knows directly where this quote comes from, or of the tribute
by Oscar Arias, can they please tell us all?? I'll undertake to pass on
the information to Richard Jolly - who it seems needs it most!
RSS News for Dec 2000 includes a summary of the Jolly lecture. The Dec
2000 issue also gives and a summary of a paper Growth and Welfare given by
Richard Douthwaite. Douthwaite's paper was given in a session on
'Economic statistics and economic welfare'. and is very critical of
economic statistics. At the moment it seems that the RSS is currently
being a bit more radical about economic statistics than Radstats!
Helps to show that the most effective reformers and revolutionaries wear
grey suits rather than jeans. And of course they speak up rather than lie in
the gutter and look at the stars!!
As my political credentials have been challenged (mostly off list) I need to
say that I learned about the effectiveness of grey-suited reformers as a
card carrying activist in the AScW.
No prizes for guessing what AScW stands for, but it would be useful to have
a contribution that said what happened to the AScW and the relationship, if
any, to the establishment of Radstats.
