Following on from Nicholas and John's postings, I have just tried from home to access some of Edge Hill's journals via Ingenta and I am appalled. Over the last year I have added easylink URLs to all of our Ingenta journals including those from Academic Press and both Blackwells. What I have found tonight is that is when I clicked on the easylink URL from home for an AP journal it took me straight into the journal (no authentication). Full text option brings up the registration screen which John referred to and the only option (I could see first time) was to register with Ingenta which I did and was then asked for 36.00. I tried again with a Blackwells journal and this time did notice the username and password tab on the left * but no mention of Athens!
Are Bids still recommending that we still use the easylink option?
We can access most of our journals via Ingenta and Swetsnavigator. I made the decision a year ago to go with Ingenta because of the way a user could go straight into the list of the issues for a journal. Those of you who use Swetsnavigator will know that although one can do that with IP recognition, it is not possible from home. In Swetsnavigator you are taken to an Athens login box and then have to search for the journal again.
I did test the new Ingenta site when it became live. However I tested it on campus and although I did not particularly like the new interface, I did get fulltext access reasonably easily. I feel that if I struggled to get home access tonight, then most of our students will have big problems. We have access to over 3000 electronic journals and one of the reasons we have gone down this road is to support our part time and distance learners.
What do BIDS thinks about this? The strange thing is that if I go into Ingenta Journal via Bids, it is the old familiar interface. It knows immediately what I can access because I have had to go in with an Athens personal account.
I would like to echo John's request that the previous interface is re-introduced until these problems are sorted. If this does not happen, I cannot see any alternative than making it a summer job to change all my links to Swetsnavigator. I do apologise for the length of this email. I am normally a lurker on these lists but I am absolutely incensed by what I have discovered tonight.
