The Dangerous Don: Translating Cervantes' Masterpiece - John Rutherford
All literary translation is subversive and dangerous because it opens its
readers and their culture to the foreign, the other, and so forces them to
question and reassess their own values and assumptions. To maximise this
subversion the translator has to resist any pressure to adapt the text
totally to the receiving language and culture and thereby remove all sense
of otherness. John Rutherford explores these complexities with particular
reference to his recently published translation of Don Quixote and argues
that, for the translator, playing safe can only result in mediocrity
