The following statement has been prepared by Diana Murray and myself and also discussed with the NMRs in England and Wales:
Responsibility for the supply of information on 'antiquities' for publication on Ordnance Survey (OS) maps was transferred to the (then) three Royal Commissions in England, Scotland and Wales in 1983. This responsibility has been actively undertaken since then through the three National Monuments Records (NMRs) and will continue under a revised agreement for the foreseeable future.
The three NMRs have adapted their methodology to ensure that information resulting from fieldwork and desk-based programmes is supplied to OS in a format suitable for incorporation on conventional and digital mapping. Unfortunately, the NMRs were unable to influence the initial OS data capture exercise in the late 1980's and 1990's that led to the inadequate representation of many of the 'antiquities' on the Landline data but the NMRs are now working closely with OS to ensure that 'heritage' information will be included in the new OS digital product - MasterMap (formerly known as DNF). MasterMap is a new digital product that will replace Landline and will consist of feature geometry (lines, points and polygons) with each geographic feature individually coded with TOIDS - TOpographic IDentifiers.
The three NMRs and OS are working closely together to improve the way that the heritage information is depicted on OS digital products. Ways of enhancing the depictions are therefore being explored with OS that include:
* Examining the way the features are shown and represented by polygons, lines and points on the digital map with a view to putting in place a long term upgrade programme
* Participating in an OS research project with Edinburgh University to explore the ways that digital hachures can be created and applied to the digital maps to put back some visual impression of slope
* Working with OS on a research project to test the concept of providing active online links between the individual features in MasterMap and the three NMR databases in England, Scotland and Wales.
