'Spirit Bear' Protected In Precedent Setting Deal
Province, Logging Companies, First Nations And Environmentalist Signing
Agreement
VANCOUVER, 6:35 p.m. PDT April 3, 2001 --BCTV has learned Premier Ujjal
Dosanjh will announce a precedent setting agreement just reached between the
provincial government, several logging companies, the Kitasoo First Nation
and environmentalists.
A consensus has amazingly been reached on just how B.C.'s central coast land
should be used.
More than one million hectares of green space and ocean floor will be
protected immediately, and forest companies will lose their right to log
that land. There will be an additional deferral of development on a second,
even larger portion of land for 1-2 years.
