To add to Malcolm's comments: in the '70s, we were dealing with
machines with word lengths of 48, 60, 36, etc. Certainly there
was nothing close to the agreement on 32, 64, and 128 bits that
we have now (however, logical it seem at this time). So
selected_real_kind *really* would have been useful then 8^).
And I don't recall anybody even discussing the possibility of
picking names for all of these; getting generic intrinsics
like COS and ABS was considered a big step.
