We want to stop doing amniotic fluid AFPs, as numbers are now very low, and
recalculating medians difficult. However, we work with a Regional Genetics
Service, and some fluid samples they receive have requests for ONTD screen
included (eg older women having amnios, who have chosen not to have serum
screening or have poor U/S views). I would like to write to all our
obstetrics colleagues and discourage requesting fluid AFPs so has anyone got
a few really good references on why fluid AFP assays are now little used in
the UK? A good review of ultrasound diagnosis/up to date figures on ONTD
incidence in the UK etc. I did a search but there was nothing really
convincing and very up to date.
However, sometimes, the assay may be helpful so is there anyone in the UK,
still routinely doing fluid AFPs, in sensible numbers and with a good
turnaround time? None appear on Assay Finder at present. The NEQAS scheme
has 32 participants but many are not in the UK. I would like to be able to
refer occasional samples to such a lab, from 01.10.01 if at all possible.
