"Blood and tissue samples
Blood or tissue samples will often be taken before or during your operation, to be tested as part of your care. Sometimes they may also be re-tested by other practitioners for 'quality assurance' - to check the first practitioner's work.
Sometimes, blood or tissue which has been removed from you during the operation may also be useful to others - for example for teaching or for research. The NHS will have a local system for checking whether or not you are happy to allow your blood or tissue to be used for education or research purposes."
