I can recall one problem we had using ammonium heparinised capillary tubes for foetal head samples. This was used OK in the labour ward on their blood gas machine but when they occasionally used the blood gas analyser in the neonatal unit the ammonia killed the glucose electrode.

Our Obstetric theatres are having problems finding an easy-to-use system for
taking foetal head capillary samples for blood gas analysis. I would
appreciate any information about experiences elsewhere, especially of
names/addresses and telephone numbers of suppliers. This problem seems to
be part of POCT and involvement of Pathology.
