Barlaam and Josaphat was indeed a medieval best seller and versions in
prose, verse etc are probably to be found in almost every European language
during the Middle Ages.
As one might expect, there is a large secondary literature on the topic.
The entry in the Catholic Encyclopedia includes references to nineteenth
century academic literature. However, a more up-to-date treatment is
