The artist on the artist
by Harry Guest
26 October / 7pm / in English
How have painters, writers and composers examined the process of
artistic creation? Responses have varied from honest bewilderment
through admiration to satire. Others have adopted a more oblique
approach or used imaginary examples. Proust, Virginia Woolf and
Thomas Mann invented fictional artists to analyse their own
predicament. Harry Guest hopes that this book may introduce some
readers to unfamiliar works and offer others a fresh method of
considering familiar ones.
Harry Guest read Modern Languages at Cambridge, wrote a thesis
on Mallarmé at the Sorbonne and lectured at Yokohama University.
He is an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Exeter. His
work - novels and poetry - has been broadcast and televised in
several countries and his poems translated into French, Japanese,
Italian and Estonian.
