<Whoever the author of *The Arte of English
<Poesie* (1588) may have been physically>
Actually it was _printed_ 1589, though it was entered 9 Nov. 1588 and
assigned to Field 7 April 1589. By c. 1590-1 John Harington was sufficiently
sure that the treatise was by Puttenham to ask Field (who is likely to have
known who the author was) to set his translation of Orlando furioso in the
same type as Puttenham's book. Unfortunately he does not give a first name.
George's brother Richard seems an unlikely candidate, since he does not seem
to have had the kind of training or interests which would make it probable
that he would go on to write an Arte of Poesie.
