To add a little note to John Wickstrom's. In our monastery, which is in
northwest Missouri, we begin the use of cucullas and continue their use
until the feast of the Finding of the Cross (that is, from Cross to Cross).
I don't know if any other monasteries follow this tradition. Summers in our
part of the country are terrible hot and humid and to wear cucullas during
the summer season would be a heavy cross indeed. Our monastic fathers came
from the monastery of Engelberg in Switzerland, some stayed in Missouri and
some went to the west coast where the temperatures were more temperate and
found the monastery of Mount Angel.
