Dear colleagues,
As I find myself quite unexpectedly in Santiago de Compostela, I am
surrounded by many publications -- in Galician, Spanish, you name it -- on
Santiago and its related pilgrimage routes. Does anyone know of a recent
historiographical study of this prodigious output, or a recent
hagiographical study of the history of James's cult? This would help me to
go straight to 'the good stuff', and I would be grateful for your
suggestions.
Best wishes,
George
PS: I had the occasion to witness the 'botafumeiro' -- the giant liturgical
vessel used to burn incense -- being swung like a carnival ride at the end
of a Sunday mass. Does anyone know of similar liturgical showmanship in
other churches? (For the purposes of this question, I would not include
'good preaching'!)
