The Healthcare Evaluation Unit at St Georges Hospital Medical School has done extensive research into assessing clinical guidelines and used to assess all the guidelines that the DoH commissioned. They do have a website and I think Francois Cluzeau would be the person to contact.

Dear Friends,
I intend to assess the quality of a series of practice guidelines produced by Professional Bodies and Societies. I have the checklists that were published in JAMA's User Guide to medical literature and David Sackett's EBM book on assessing guidelines for their validity. These don't appear to be validated checklists. A recent paper in the Lancet by Roberto Grilli et al used a list of 3 unvalidated questions to assess the quality of guidelines and suggested that development of a fully validated assessment tool may be on the way. If you know of any validated checklist for quality assessment of guidelines, please let me know. Cheers!
