I'm sure others will respond with more accurate information, but in the
interim, my guess is that 'imshee kelb' is Arabic: kelb is certainly dog in
Arabic, although my knowledge of the language is so tiny that I can't help
with 'imshee'.
The Land Girls were the women in the Second World War who went to work on the
farms to replace the men who had gone to the front. I was not aware the term
was used in the First War, but it must mean the same thing, no?
Hope you get answers that are more positive than this!
Best

I am currently trying to translate "The Janeites" into French. No mean task.
VCould someone tell me in which language does "Imshee kelb" mean "get out,
you dog", according to a note in the Penguin edition, with the precision that
this is originally a "author's note". It is not in Michaël Smith's precious
glossary. I may note that French slang has "klebs" to mean "dog".
Also, the sister who tries to prevent Humberstall to get into the hospital
train alludes to "her Pa in Ladbroke Grove". Would this Ladbroke grove have
some Janeite connotation ?
Finally does someone know what the "Land Girls" ("who wore khaki breeches on
account of the mud") could have been ?
