Information Society Training and Awareness Raising Networks
The ISTAR Networks pilot project, supported by the European Commission DG
EMPL (formerly DG V), was completed successfully on 27 April 2000. ISTAR was
funded under the Regional Information Society Initiatives (RISI2) programme
over a two-and-a-half year period, to a value of some E2 million. It is now
planned, with the EU's support, to establish ISTAR as a self-sustaining
training and service delivery brand in European markets.
Using the public library network, working in co-operation with other
agencies, ISTAR has had a major and demonstrable impact on the use of ICT,
the Internet and digital literacy among people in post-formal education age
groups (including SMEs, teleworkers and distance learners) in the three
pilot regions in which it has implemented services. These are Imathia
(Central Macedonia, Greece), Western Education and Libraries Board (Northern
Ireland) and Thuringen (Germany).
