Interim Saints - July 26th
ANNE, mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary
There is a skull of S. Anne, with the rest of her bones, also at Apte,
of which, however, the lower jaw is wanting, which Charlemagne is said
to have given to the church of Aix-la-Chapelle. Another head of S.
Anne at Chartres, brought from the East in the 12th cent., by Louis,
count of Blois, who died on a second visit to the Holy Land in 1205.
Another at Bologna, given by Henry VI of England, to Nicolas Albergati.
Another skull, entire save for the jaw, at Castel-bona in Sicily, with
a Greek inscription on it, brought from Lorraine by John de Hieac,
about A.D. 1468. Another head at Duren in Germany. The arms of S.
Anne are more numerous than the heads; I must refer the reader to the
tedious lists in the Bollandists.
ERASTUS, (1st century)
It is supposed by some that there were two of this name . . . But it is
more probable that there was only one Erastus.
PASTOR, priest (2nd cent.)
S. Pastor is said by Anastasius Bibliothecarius to have been the
brother of Pope S. Pius I.
SYMEON, hermit (A.D. 1016)
Symeon, a native of Armenia, ran away from his home, when his parents
had married him to a suitable wife, and took refuge with some other
like-minded men in a cave, where they lived as hermits.
Carolyn asked me to do this spot until July 26th, so I now hand the
baton back to her. In any case, I am off to Walsingham for a couple of
days. Summer Competition: assuming that the various relics of St.
Anne are genuine, draw a picture of her as you imagine her to have
looked, and put it up on the web for our admiration. BTW, a dog's
head, dug up recently in a local churchyard, is believed to be that of
St Christopher.
Oriens.
