CHANGING COUNTRYSIDES: CULTURE, SOCIETY & POLITICS
Session sponsored by the Rural Economy & Society Study Group (RESSG)
Association of American Geographers Conference, New York City, 27th February
- 3rd March 2001
Rural areas and societies across the developed world have experienced
considerable change in recent decades. As the myths of the homogeneous
countryside have been undermined, so rural space has become recognised as a
diverse and disputed territory. Conflicts and contests have arisen over the
use and development of rural space, the protection of local, rural, cultures
and practices, and the meaning of the rural experience. A politics of the
rural has gained prominence at local, regional and national scales; new
institutional forms have been innovated in the governance of the rural; and
new strategies of diversification and community engagement employed in the
pursuit of rural regeneration. At the same time, interest has been renewed
in issues of social exclusion, poverty and lifestyle in rural communities.
This broad-ranging session aims to accommodate papers on all aspects of the
culture, society and politics of the changing countryside, bringing together
perspectives from North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Anyone interested in participating should send a title and abstract of
around 250 words to be received by 11th August by post or e-mail to:
