Call for Panel Participants
Panel Session for AAG 2001, New York City
SEXUALITY AND FIELDWORK
Organisers: Robert Vanderbeck and Kathryn Morris-Roberts,
University of Sheffield
Sponsor: Sexuality and Space Speciality Group
Although there have been some recent discussions of issues of
sexuality and fieldwork emerging from anthropology and sociology,
this area has been little explored within geography, and there remains
considerable scope (and need) for an expanded exploration of the
implication of sexuality and sexual identiy for the fieldwork process.
In this session, we hope to provide a forum for discussion of a variety
of issues relating to sexuality and fieldwork, potentially including but
not limited to:
* the implications of 'straight', 'gay', and other sexual identities and
performances on relations with research participants
* issues of disclosure / non-disclosure of sexual orientation in the
field
* impression management by researchers in the field
* encountering homophobia during fieldwork
* the implication and ethics of romance and sexual relationships
during fieldwork
* intersections of race, class, and sexuality in the field
* and related issues
If you think you might like to participate in this panel session, please
email Robert Vanderbeck ([log in to unmask]) preferably by
August 10 2000 with a short message regarding your potential
contribution to the session. We welcome participation by
geographers of all subdisciplines (human or physical), methodological
perspectives (qualitative or quantitiative), and sexual orientations.
Please note that, as this is a panel session rather than a paper session,
your participation in this panel would not preclude your presentation
of a paper in another session.
