A considerable number of bishops also became

This chap was driven to distraction by his pupil Abelard, who made it
clear that he didn't think much of his scholarship. He was also the
pal of St Bernard of Clairvaux, who helped him refound the old
monastery of St Victor as a house of Augustinian Canons (hence Hugh of
St Victor, Richard of St Victor, Andrew of St Victor and indeed Peter
Lombard). I suspect that with his dying breath William begged Bernard
to stick it to Abelard for him. If so, Bernard obliged handsomely.
Oriens.
