Strictly speaking, the Magnificat is a canticle rather than a psalm
(along with the Benedictus and the Nunc Dimittis, being found in
the Gospels--there are also canticles from the Old Testament). Afraid
I can't speak to 13th-century Chartres, but many of the canticles
are included and glossed in Old English psalters and are part of
the Office. I'm away from my sources, so I also can't speak more
specifically to the earlier appearances of the Magnificat.
Best,
Pat
