These are timely observations and further responses to Nick's comments re
limitations on networking true multi-media would be particularly welcomed
from both library services and suppliers (Fenwood - are you there?) given
that within a fairly short period public library networking capacity will be
significantly enhanced by the People's Network developments.
Rich content learning applications for all ages will increasingly be a
normal expectation and until the final demise of CDROM/DVD as a worthwhile
format there will very likely be an increased expectation for networking
content. It really is no fun at smaller libraries "looking after" a dozen or
more CDROMs and handing them out piecemeal to individual users on demand. At
the same time, followers of the cdrom networking list
[log in to unmask] will understand that this is anyway
something of a black art and may wish to add futher comments.
If my attempt at cross-posting succeeds, please forgive in view of the
topic.

The main snag is that true multi-media cannot be networked by Citrix. Any
title that has a significant amount of audio content (and that includes most
children's titles) have to be cached on the local BDCs.
