Dear Rob,
You suggest that there is not a problem in the sciences using the 'PhD
award' as the basis for a training in industry. In fact, it is widely
recognised in the UK that the PhD is not appropriate for this task. The
Engineering Council and various engineering institutions in the UK have
been engaged for some time in addressing this problem (see for example,
most copies in the the last five years of Professional Engineer). The
result is a reenvisaging of tertiary engineering training, and a strong
move towards the Doctor of Engineering as the preferred award for advanced
engineering practice. This DEng award is essentially a super-Masters that
in most cases reflects advanced abilities with the scientific tools for
engineering (in the main, advanced skills at mathematical analyses and
engineering project management).
Best wishes
Terry
