Dear Friends and Colleagues
Please find attached the first circular in Word and text formats for the
6th eclogite conference that will be held in Japan, from September 1 to 7,
2001. The meeting is concerned with a broad range of studies including the
tectonics, petrogenesis, geochemistry and mineralogy of eclogites and other
related high and ultrahigh P/T metamorphic rocks. Further details and a
registration form are available at
http://ganko.eps.nagoya-u.ac.jp/iec2001/index.html.

First Circular and Call for Papers
Dear Colleagues,
You are invited to participate in the sixth International Eclogite
Conference that will take place in Ehime Prefectural Science Museum,
Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, from September 1 to 7, 2001. Those
wishing to attend should arrive in Niihama on Saturday, September 1, after
3 p.m. Departure will be Friday morning, September 7. Two one-day field
trips will be organized during the conference, in the period September 3-6.
These field trips will introduce participants to the various-types of
eclogite, garnet clinopyroxenite, peridotite and epidote amphibolite of the
Mt. Higashi-akaishi area, and an eclogitized gabbro body surrounded by
eclogite facies basic and pelitic schists in the Seba-dani area.
THEMES
The Sixth International Eclogite Conference 2001 is concerned with a broad
range of studies including the tectonics, petrogenesis, geochemistry and
mineralogy of eclogites and other related high and ultrahigh P/T
metamorphic rocks. Special emphasis will be placed on the following
themes:
1. Tectonic models for the exhumation of eclogites and related high
and ultrahigh P/T metamorphic rocks in both subduction- and collision-zone
settings.
2. Experimental, thermodynamical and geological constraints on the
conditions of eclogite formation.
3. Geochemical interaction between the crust and the upper mantle
4. Detailed chronology of eclogite formation and exhumation.
CONTRIBUTIONS
Contributions should all be in English. Oral presentations will be 20
minutes including discussion. Due to the restricted time for talks at
this conference, it is likely that not all requests for oral presentations
can be accommodated. Contributors are strongly encouraged to consider
poster presentations, and it is highly desirable that the contents of talks
also be presented as posters. The organizing committee will invite several
key-note speakers to give 30 minute presentations introducing the main
themes of the conference.
PUBLICATIONS
Abstracts of both oral and poster contributions will be published before
the conference. Copies of the abstracts will be distributed at the
conference, together with the excursion guides. A special issue of Lithos
based on presentations at the conference is also planned and is scheduled
to be published in August 2002.
GUESTS
Guests are persons accompanying participants of the conference, but not
taking part in the scientific programme. If there is sufficient seating
available, some guests may be able to participate in the excursions.
CIRCULARS AND TERMS
If you intend to participate in IEC2001, please pre-register via the
internet at the following address:
http://ganko.eps.nagoya-u.ac.jp/iec2001/register.html or, if you do not
have internet access, you may submit your preliminary registration via
e-mail to: [log in to unmask] using the appended form. You
will then receive the Second Circular in February 2001, together with the
data of your Preliminary Registration and the Final Registration Form. If
you do not receive this material by the end of February 2001, please
contact the conveners ([log in to unmask]) immediately.
Deadlines are:
1. For returning the Preliminary Registration Form: December 31, 2000.
2. For returning the Final Registration Form: March 31, 2001.
3. For paying the registration fee as well as the accommodation
deposit: May 31, 2001.
4. For sending camera ready copies of the abstracts of talks and
posters: May 31, 2001.
5. For sending us your arrival data: August 15, 2001.
REGISTRATION AND ACCOMMODATION
Most participants will be accommodated at the "Rihga Royal Hotel
(http://www.rihga.com/ehime/index.html)" in the town of Niihama. Only a
limited number of single rooms are available at the Rihga Royal Hotel and
those registrating first will have precedence. Final registration will be
considered to have taken place on the date when the conveners receive
notice that both the Final Registration data and payments of the
registration fee and accommodation deposit (half the accommodation cost)
have arrived.
The registration fee and accommodation costs should not exceed Japanese Yen
80,000 (currently US$ 750) for fully paying participants, or Japanese Yen
70,000 (currently US$ 650) for student participants. These costs include
transportation by bus on the two days of the excursions during the
conference. We hope there will be some funds that can be used to support
attendance of students at the conference
