Dear Mr. Carey!
Thank you for your German translation of "low-down"!
My dictionary of Contemporary English (Longman) tells me:
Low-down on something: the most important facts about something
I discussed the problem with my father (he is 91 years old, but he dispose
of a huge collection of works about multilinguistic idioms) and we agreed:
The Latin translation could be: "libere profiteri" or "vera sincere dicere"
The German translation: "ungeschminkte Wahrheit" is a litte bit negative.
Some words to the the problems of humanities:
I'm an outsider, a non-professional, an amateur. Due to the lack of time I
tried to be focused on one only topic "Peter Abelard". I have been reading
many publications. In the meantime I know: Even in this special topic I will
never reach an end.
But on reading much, I got my own opinion about professional scholarship.
Nationalism is only one of the problems. Jealousy another. But the
phenomenon, which makes me more sad than all, is: In every important
contemporary publication about medieval manuscipts, which have been copied
again and again lasting for decades, I will find a little annotation on page
2: "Copyright. No part of this book may be used or reproduced in any
manner..."
Commercialism may be useful for certain projects, but in the end it's fatal
for every science!
This is the value of the Net and the task of a discussion group like this -
to overcome the problems!
With many regards
W. Robl
