The course is co-ordinated by Isabel dos Santos Silva, Bianca
De Stavola, Michel Coleman, Klim McPherson and Julian Peto in
the Cancer and Public Health Unit of the London School of Hygiene
& Tropical Medicine. It will be taught by these and other staff
members of the School and outside experts in the field.
The topics to be covered will include:
* Overview of the burden of cancer
* Study designs: from observational studies to randomised trials
* Introduction to statistical methods for cancer epidemiology
* Interpretation of epidemiological studies
* Cancer prevention and control strategies
* Evaluation of cancer screening programmes
* Cancer care: evaluating survival at a population level
* The role of infectious agents in cancer aetiology
* Application of biomarkers in cancer epidemiology
* Genetics and cancer
A one-day workshop on cancer screening will conclude the course and
include presentations from experts in the field. Topics will include:
* Breast screening: has it been effective? Should the programme be expanded?
* Cervical screening: has it been effective? Current issues and controversies.
* Screening for other cancers: where do we stand now?
The fee for the full course is 550 pounds. The fee for the one-day workshop
on cancer screening (if taken separately from the course) is 125 pounds.
