Dear all,
I have had a request from the radiocarbon lab here for some
bone which they can use as a standard. They would like a
large animal bone (a cattle femur was what they had in
mind) that is at least 2000 years old that they can sample
both compact and cancellous bone. They will provide you
with a radiocarbon date and isotopic analyses in return.
Anyone out there got some spare old bones, or ones they are
prepared to sacrifice for a free date. I don't think they
actually need a complete bone but a large chunk will do. The only
stuff I could think of is material found near eroding sites
etc, where you know its probably Iron Age, for example, but
it is not stratified.
Please contact me with any offers.
