Dear collaege
Our phlebologists observed that the nursing staff is allowed to take
samples distally to an infusion site (from the back of the hand),
which to them is strictly forbidden. This option is usually
considered when sampling from the opposite arm is impossible.
A extensive literature search produced: Am J Clin Pathol
1983;79:119-21 which recommends 2 min. of waiting after the
infusion has been stopped, and yet states that glucose and
phosphorus values differed from those in the opposite arm.
Although we think we should not adopt dubious procedures, we are
curious to know if someone has more data, literature.
Thank you for responding,
Best regards,
Raymond Wulkan
