The Department for Education and Employment collect FSM data for all schools
in England in their annual schools' census (Form 7) which is normally
undertaken around the third week in January each year.
I've not seen the 2000 forms but the 1999 forms asked schools to record the
number of day pupils on the register that had a free school meal on 21/1/99
(or the next 'normal' day if the 21st is abnormal) and also the number known
to be eligible for a free school meal.
In its Autumn Package of pupil information to schools the DfEE publishes
some benchmark tables of National Curriculum Test results having banded
schools on their FSM measure. As a result of feedback on the 1998 AP, I
think they collected some additional school level FSM data last year from
schools to add to the Form 7 figures.
The DfEE is hoping in the not too distant future to enhance the Form 7
collection by capturing the information, including FSM, at a pupil level
rather than at a school or cohort level.

Does anyone know of the existence of any UK data on numbers of
children taking free school meals? National/ regional/ local?
Many thanks
