All this will soon be academic. Later this year (27 November 2000) it seems
Mailbase will move to the CCLRC servers at Rutherford Appleton.
Here is the link to announcement:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/news/1999-12-13.html
The list will then run of listserve software. I can tell you from experience
that it is much better than Mailbase. It can trap errant messages and is
much more easy to configure.
I have run a list on their server for some years with hardly a hiccup. It is
set up so that "Reply" goes back to the list. We have never seen an
autoresponder message.
I strongly urge the owners of this list to do a bit of homework and to work
out how they want to configure the list. If you are in the Janet network,
you probably have access to a really neat web based interface. My only
regret is that the security at CCLRC is so good that I have to work by
email.
To make up for boring the rear end off everyone about off topic trivia, and
to see if anyone gets this far, can I throw in an anonymous suggestion for
the name we use for this PUS, PUSET caper.
Here is a not stolen from the end of a message from someone who sits and
watches (the coward) without joining the fun.
"I dislike the acronym PUS, and PUSET is even worse. What is wrong with PEST
(public engagement with science and technology)?"
The nice thing about PEST is that it would upset the more toffee nosed
gatekeepers of the activity.
I might be tempted to make it "Public Engagement in Science and Technology".
But who is quibbling?

Subject: Replying to psci-com messages
Dear all
Further to Michael Kenwood's message about replying to psci-com messages,
let me clarify the situation as it now stands. The psci-com list is set so
that - if you click the reply button on your e-mail software - replies go to
the sender of the original message. To reply to the list you need to click
the "reply to all" button.
